Motherhood is a unique gift of God. It is the continuation of God’s creative work. A mother not only gives birth to a child but also nurtures the child to grow into a successful human being. The dignity of motherhood is so great that it is not easy to understand it. A woman’s motherhood is the greatest miracle of creation by bringing forth a human being into the world.
The Holy Bible portrays stories of many mothers. From the first mother Eve found in the Book of Genesis to Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, many mothers are shown as role modelsof motherhood. In the Holy Bible, there have been queen mothers like Bathsheba and women who became mothers in their advanced age like Sarah and Elizabeth.
Mary, mother of Jesus, is the greatest model of motherhood. She was a very simple woman who was full of love for others. God chose her to be the mother of Jesus because of her simplicity and greatest love towards God.
Mary was a simple woman of Judea
Mary was a simple woman of a remote village of Judea which was least thought of being a dwelling place of a future Messiah. It was a small village which would have contained only a few hundred dwellings.
Was mary surrounded and served by angels in her household works as some ancient pictures depict Mary? Did the family of Joseph get food from heaven, rained as Manna? Do you think their clothes were washed by some heavenly intervention? No, No.
Mary had to work hard to meet the needs of a family. she had to carry water from the water resources as other Jewish women did. She had to bake bread to the three mouths of her household.
The family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus lived asimple life. Their house might not have been a royal palace, but small house made of mud with a floor of beaten earth. mary had to clean the house and do all the works of an ordinary mother.
Mary was a loving woman
Mary was loved by her neighbors and other women. She did not hesitate to visit Elizabeth and help her in her advanced pregnancy.
When there was a scarcity of wine during the wedding at Cana, mother Mary come forward to take the initiative to solve the problem.
Mary loved and believed God
Mary prayed and sought the guidance of God in every move of her life. She loved God so much that she entrusted herself to the complete will of God. “Let it be done to me according to your will” was her consistent and constant prayer. Her trust in God gave her the strength to carry out everything as per the divine will. She always sang in her heart with gratitude that her her soul glorified the Lord and her spirit rejoiced in God my Savior.
It was the simplicity, humility and trust in God that made her a proud mother who could sing, “From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me”.
